3.         IDENTIFICATION OF DANGERS

Xn Harmful

R42 May cause sensitisation by inhalation

The product contains isocyanates

For further information see paragraph 15

4.         FIRST AID MEASURES

Contact with eyes Rinse carefully with plenty of water and consult a doctor

Contact with skin Remove by hand, and wash carefully with plenty of soap and water

Ingestion & Breathing In the case of ingestion or breathing irritation consult a doctor

5.         FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES

No unusual fire danger. The flash point is greater than 200oC.  Not spontaneously combustible

EXTINGUISHING METHODS

Anti-fire powder

Nebulised water

Carbon dioxide

In the case of fire the following substances may form: carbon monoxide, nitric acid, isocyanate vapours and traces of cyanidric acid.

FIRE-EXTINGUISHING METHODS TO AVOID

None

SPECIAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT FOR FIRE-FIGHTING TEAMS

Wear special aqualung to extinguish flames.

6.         ACCIDENTAL LEAKAGE MEASURES

Do not dispose of in drains.

Clean away leakage mechanically: cover leakage with damp absorbent material (e.g. sawdust, reactive chemical binders based on calcium hydrate silicate, sand).  After 1 hour, collect in a waste container.  Do not close (it develops carbon dioxide).  Keep humid and leave for many days in the open air in a controlled area.

Further disposal should be by incineration in accordance with the local laws.

7.         HANDLING AND STORAGE

The containers should be kept dry and airtight closed in a cool airy place, which is protected from sunlight.

The temperature should be between +5oCe +28oC.

Provide sufficient air ventilation/aspiration in working areas.

Avoid contact with skin and eyes.

8.         EXPOSURE CONTROL/INDIVIDUAL PROTECTION

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

Skin Protection

Wear protective working clothes, boots, overall and gloves.

Permeability tests indicate the following materials as efficient for protective clothing, butyl rubber, neoprene, nirile/butadiene rubber.  Thin disposable gloves should not be used for long periods.  Carefully wash with soap and water after work or before eating, drinking or smoking.  Contaminated clothing should be washed or dry-cleaned before reuse.

Facial and Eye Protection

Use chemical-proof glasses

10.        REACTIVITY AND STABILITY

Chemical Stability

Product remains stable if handled in recommended storage conditions

Conditions to be avoided

Avoid excessive heat

Reactivity

MDI base products react with many substances by generating heat, such as, chemical bases (e.g. caustic soda), ammonia, primary and secondary amine, alcohol, water and acids.  MDI base products are insoluble in water and as they are denser than water, precipitate to the bottom, slowly reacting on the interface.  The reaction forms a solid polyurea layer which is not soluble in water and which releases carbon dioxide.

11.        TOXILOGICAL INFORMATION

The product contains isocyanates under the limits of dangerousness

Ingestion

Toxicity caused by a single oral dosage is low.  The oral LD50 for rats is >2000mg/kg. (body weight)

Contact with Eyes

May cause sensitisation

Contact with Skin

Skin sensitivity can be developed following prolonged and repeated contact.

12.        ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION

Valuation widely or completely based on data relative to similar materials

Mobility and Bloaccumulation Potential

Environment mobility is limited by the formation of insoluble polymers.  Chemically harmless insoluble polyurea forms in damp environments.  Volatilisation from water to air has not been verified.

Degradation

The polyurea biodegradation in static laboratory conditions is estimated to be low

Aqua Toxicity

The substance is estimated to be non toxic for fish, Daphnia and bacteria on an acute static base.

THE PRODUCT IS NOT BIODEGRADABLE

13.        DISPOSAL GUIDELINES

Disposal

The generation of waste should, if possible be avoided or minimised.  The recommended waste disposal method is by incineration in controlled and approved conditions, using suitable incinerators especially designed for the disposal of dangerous chemical waste.  Small quantities of waste may be pre-treated, for example, with polyol, for neutralization before disposal.  The empty containers should be left in the open air in order to allow complete polymerisation and then delivered to an authorised recycling company.

Type of waste

Uncured/Cured:  Polyurethane adhesive/sealant waste C.E.R code 080410
